The Parenting Teenagers Course at St John’s, Cooks Hill

What is The Parenting Teenagers Course?

Parents, have you noticed how quickly your kids are growing up? Last time you looked they were learning to crawl, and now they are thinking about learning to drive?! Parenting teenagers is more challenging than ever. Join us for the Parenting Teenagers Course. Over five Sunday afternoons in November you will discover insights into adolescent development as well as communication skills, conflict resolution strategies and practical advice on how to provide positive parenting throughout this developmental stage.

The aim of the Parenting Teenagers Course is to equip parents and caregivers of teenagers aged 11–18 years old with strategies to build a healthy relationship while guiding them into adulthood.

Much like the Parenting Children Course that we offered last year, each afternoon contains two sessions of DVD course, then a chance to talk in couples or groups and share what you’ve learned or through about the topic. The DVDs include filmed clips of parents and teenagers sharing their own experiences, street interviews and advice from parenting experts. The Parenting Teenagers Course is for every type of parenting situation, including parenting on your own, step-parenting and parenting as a couple.

Over five sessions you will discover practical tools to help you:

  • Keep your long-term aim in mind
  • Meet your teenagers’ needs
  • Set effective boundaries
  • Help develop your teenagers’ emotional health
  • Pass on values and help them make good choices

You will not be required to share anything about your family life that you would prefer not to. Every part of the course is optional, including contributing to the small group discussions.

The course, while based on Christian principles, is relevant and helpful for any parent with or without a Christian faith or church background.

Why do the course?

  • Children do not arrive with an instruction manual
  • No role we undertake is more important than parenting

Family life is under great pressure today and parents face bewildering choices about how to parent effectively. Discovering we are not alone in the challenges we face and picking up ideas from other parents can make a huge difference. We can all learn how to make even the happiest family better.

At St John’s, we will run the course for church families to start with from 3–4.30pm on all the Sundays in November 2015: 1 November–29 November 2015. There will be no cost.
