Many thanks to everyone who supported the Guadalcanal 300 Club appeal last Sunday. I’m thrilled to let the parish know that we raised approximately $1600 towards that project last week. It’s wonderful to think that the generosity of members of St John’s has raised approximately 10% of the appeal target. I will ask the diocese to share information on the boat for the Diocese of Guadalcanal when it has been purchased.
Blessings, Murray

Samaritans Winter Appeal
Samaritans has launched its Winter Appeal and is calling on you to help put an end to youth homelessness – an invisible crisis. You will find a letter and donation form included in this month’s edition of the Encounter magazine. Please consider a gift to Samaritans 2017 Winter Appeal and return the form with your donation or donate online at www.samaritans.org.au/donate. Every dollar helps Samaritans support young people in our Diocese. Thank you for your generosity!
Anglican Women Australia
This year, the Anglican Women Australia Conference is hosted by the Diocese of Newcastle. During the conference, the Anglican Women’s service will be held at Newcastle Cathedral on Tuesday 6 June 2017, with morning tea from 9.45 am. The service begins at 10.30am, Bishop Peter Stuart will preside and Bishop Kay Goldsworthy will be the speaker. This service is open to all, not just those attending the Conference.
St John’s Women’s Guild – first Monday of each month at 9.30am
St John’s Women’s Guild meets in the church hall at 9.30am on the first Monday of each month. The Guild is a group of women who support the ministry of our church by fundraising throughout the year. Last year, that fundraising supported General ministry, Youth ministry, Church restoration, the purchase of new equipment for the hall, and donations to our Mission target, the Samaritans and the Mission to Seafarers. New members are most welcome.
Proposed changes to St John’s Church
Parish Council has recently passed two resolutions to propose changes to St John’s church.
1. Installation of a sound console desk.
Over the years in the church, a number of audio-visual technologies have been installed in the church. Because of the diverse number of technologies used, and the way that technologies change, storage for these technologies has never been consolidated. The area around the sound desk is cluttered and difficult to organise. An organised storage space has been on the parish council agenda for years. Alan Tipping, a member of the 9am service, drew up a design for a desk and parish council has approved the design and intends to apply for permission from the bishop to install the desk. The desk will be in a medium dark oak colour.
2. Church wall hangings
The current wall hangings in the church date from the era of a previous rector who was named by Bishop Greg in sworn testimony to the Royal Commission. The majority of members of parish council believe it is time to remove the wall hangings associated with that period from our church. The deliberately grotesque style of the hangings are to some people’s tastes, but not others and so some on parish council would like to have the chance for the parish to have new artworks in those spaces. Parish Council passed a resolution to apply to the bishop for permission to remove the wall hangings in the chapel and on the west wall of the church.
Notice of these intended changes will be on the church doors for a period of fourteen days. Any parishioners who wish to comment on these changes may write to June Wooden, our Parish Secretary.
