St John’s Weekly Bulletin – Sunday 29 October 2017

This week, Mark Thornton and I went to hear Garry Coleman, the national chaplain for motorsport, speak about the upcoming Supercars event in Newcastle. While we were there, I met Howard Mole, who has been co-ordinating this year’s CityServe. We’ve had a really strong response to the CityServe project in Centennial Park this year, and another church will be helping out in Centennial Park this Saturday morning, so we may be finished there fairly early. Howard is putting on a BBQ at 8am, and we will start work after that, so if you have signed up, please come ready for a hearty breakfast!

Because of the large number of volunteers expected, we might be able to move to the churchyard work earlier than expected, maybe even by 9am! Fr Ken has been doing a magnificent job this week doing some investigation in the churchyards, tracing where the lines of the drains go and preparing for us to clean the pits and flush the drains out.

Please remember to bring a hat for some sun protection on Saturday. The weather looks like it will be cloudy but hot. We will have drinks available for volunteers to keep you hydrated through the morning.

This is an important part of the 1K Club project that has been so strongly supported this year, so thank you to everyone involved. The surveyors have been at work to prepare a detailed site survey for the St John’s site. This will aid the engineers who will be preparing plans for grading the soil around the buildings and how the drains need to be sloped to allow water to get away from our buildings.

Blessings, Murray

This bulletin was emailed to members of the parish on Thursday 26 October 2017 – if you would like to join the Weekly Bulletin email list, please call the church office on 02 4927 5399 and we will happily arrange this.

Keeping children and vulnerable adults safe

A really important part of our ministry here at St John’s is keeping children and vulnterable adults safe as part of our community.

The two basic parts ways we do that are: Working With Children Checks, and Safer Churches Training.

1. The Working With Children Check (WWCC) is a history check through a person’s national government and employment records and flagging people who might cause concern if they were allowed to work with children. In NSW, a WWCC is a requirement for people who work or volunteer with children.

2. Safer Churches Training is another basic part of our effort to keep safe. It involved a one-day course to start with, with half-day refresher courses. The list of upcoming courses is found through the Diocese of Newcastle website at: a href=http://newcastleanglican.org.au/mission-ministries/safe-ministry-training/> http://newcastleanglican.org.au/mission-ministries/safe-ministry-training/ . We require volunteers to complete this training, but we strongly recommend that all parents and people with a passion to keep St John’s safe undertake this training. It’s an excellent resource for all parents who are concerned about the safety of their children, whatever institutions and groups they are associated with.

We have a new page on our website at http://www.saintjohns.com.au/children to provide easy links for you to be involved with a Working With Children Check or Safer Churches Training. This page can be found under the “Kids, Youth and Families” tab on our website < a href=http://www.saintjohns.com.au/>homepage.
