St John’s Weekly Bulletin – Sunday 26 March 2017

Many thanks to everyone who was able to join us last weekend for the Parish Annual General Meeting. We now have our wardens and parish council for 2017 and elected a number of positions for roles that need to be filled every three years.

Our wardens for 2017 are Howard Benson, Andrew Roth, and Phil Ashley-Brown. Parish councillors are Liz Anelli, Angus Draffan, Carey Gent, David Hails, David Holt, Bede Thoroughgood, Sue Thwaites, June Wooden and Ken Youman. Jen Benson also serves on parish council as the missions secretary.

We also elected Penelope Young as our ecumenical officer.

Howard, Andrew and Sue will represent us at Synod this year, helping make church law, looking at the budget, and in the months to come, helping decide on a new bishop for Newcastle Diocese.

We also elected an incumbency board in case the parish needs to find a new rector in the next three years. Howard Benson, Susan Ashley-Brown and Andrew Roth would serve on that board, with David Hails and Fiona Dyet serving if any of the first three aren’t available.

As a parish, we should be thankful for all those people willing to serve our parish in this way. These roles are positions that require dedication and commitment. Many thanks to those who served last year in these roles, and thank you to everyone who allowed their name to go forward for the elections.

Thanks also to everyone who wrote reports for the annual report, particularly Howard for the financial reports and to June who put it all together.

Please pray for the work that parish council will do this year. Our first meeting is currently booked for 20 April at 6pm.

Many thanks also to Penny and Amanda and their familiies for working so hard on our Hollywood Trivia Night on Saturday 25 March. We really appreciate the creativity and work that has gone into making this a great evening for our parish.

Blessings,

Murray

Parish Fair – 6 May 2017

The Annual Parish Fair will be held on Saturday 6 May 2017 from 9am-1pm!

Your assistance with the Fair would be very much appreciated! The Women’s Guild need help with the provision of goods for the various stalls and also help on the day.

Stalls include: Morning Tea, Raffle, Soup, Pickles and Jam, Handcraft, Books, BBQ, Trash and Treasure, pre loved toys, Sweets, Cakes, Fruit and Veg.

If you can help on any of these stalls please contact Jenny Walkom on 0419497392 or speak to any of the Guild members.

Lemons are needed to make lemon butter, also small to medium glass jars with lids to put the jams or pickles in. These can be left in the Hall kitchen on the back shelf.

Trash & Treasure can be left in the Hall AFTER Sunday 30th April. This is so we don’t inconvenience other groups using the Hall.

We look forward to making this a great parish fair in 2017!

Men’s Weekend

The 2017 Anglican Men’s Weekend will be held 19-21 May 2017. This is a great time for men to get their faith built up with a great weekend of teaching and support. The main speaker will be Rob Llewellyn, a former professional musician, now an Anglican minister in this diocese. Please get in touch with Phil Ashley-Brown for more details, or get an information postcard from church.

Mission Giving

Each year parishes are asked to set an amount for their Mission Target. Parish council has agreed that our target for 2017 will be $7,000; $5,000 to ABM’s Adult Literacy Program in PNG and $2,000 towards the work of the Mission to Seafarers in the Port of Newcastle. There are a number of ways you can support our mission target, for those parishioners who use duplex envelopes something in the “Beyond the Parish” side of the envelope. For those who give their church offering online, you can make an additional online offering marked “Missions” or you could put something in a plain envelope and mark it “Missions” and put it on the offering plate.

During Lent envelopes will be available as extra Lenten Giving for the work of ABM, to assist projects that need extra financial support.

Please continue to pray of the work of ABM and the Mission to Seafarers.

Jennifer Benson, Parish Mission Secretary
