St John’s Weekly Bulletin – Sunday 26 February 2017

Welcome to this week’s newsletter. This is the last week before Lent – we’d love you to join us for something new in the six weeks of focus on our faith as we prepare for Easter this year. The first set of events are two Communion services – one at 7.30am, one at 7.30pm – on Ash Wednesday, 1 March 2017. All are welcome to join us for that service.

Blessings, Murray

This bulletin was emailed to members of the parish on Thursday 23 February 2017 – if you would like to join the Weekly Bulletin email list, please call the church office on 02 4927 5399 and we will happily arrange this.

Hollywood Fundraiser – 26 March 2017

St John’s invites you to put on your thinking caps and join us for a night of friendly competition at the St John’s Hollywood Trivia Night fundraiser. Form a team of six friends or come on your own and join other members of the community for a night of fun on Saturday 25th March from 6pm-8/8.30pm. Arrive from 5.30pm for a 6pm start and bring your own dinner or nibbles to dine on whilst answering questions on all areas of Hollywood movies!

Dress up as your favourite Hollywood actor from the silver screen and walk the red carpet. Cost is $15 per person and fun is guaranteed. There will be plenty of chances to win prizes on the night.

We are calling for any businesses or parishioners in the community that may be able to donate a prize for this fundraising event. If you can assist with prize donation, please contact penny@alphabetstreet.com.au or amanda.hall@newcastle.edu.au and a box will also be left up the back of the church for any suitable prizes.

Children will also be catered for with a movie and pizza night in the church whilst the parents go head to head on their Hollywood movie knowledge. Cost per child is $5.

Bookings will open soon at https://hollywoodquiz.eventbrite.com.au to purchase your tickets. Limited tickets available for the night.

Parish Annual Meeting – Sunday 19 March 2017

The Annual Meeting of St John’s Church will be held on Sunday

19 March at 3pm. Ahead of this meeting, we will need people to stand for election for the following positions:

two churchwardens, who have responsibility for the building and furniture of the church and who serve as the executive officers of the parish, including dealing with Work Health and Safety issues;

a missions secretary, who deals with the support of missionary agencies (and who serves as a member of parish council); and

five members of parish council. The first responsibility of parish council is to: assist the incumbent to lead the mission and ministry of the parish.

Please think carefully about the kind of people you would like to lead our mission and ministry. Our parish council is becoming a body which plans the mission and outreach of the church, and has focussed less on buildings and maintenance. We need people serving on parish council who are willing to plan, support and run the things that we believe God is calling us to.

Nomination forms will soon be available at the front door of the church. If you believe that you know people who would serve the parish well in this way, please get their agreement and nominate them… and please attend the meeting on 19 March to elect them!

Advanced notice: Parish Fair – 6 May 2017

We look forward to celebrating the Parish Fair on Saturday 6 May 2017. Please keep the day free in your diary, and look for more information in the notices next week.

Men’s Weekend

The 2017 Anglican Men’s Weekend will be held 19-21 May 2017. This is a great time for men to get their faith built up with a great weekend of teaching and support. The main speaker will be Rob Llewellyn, a former professional musician, now an Anglican minister in this diocese. Please get in touch with Phil Ashley-Brown for more details, or get an information postcard from church.
