St John’s Weekly Bulletin – Sunday 17 September 2017

We had a fantastic weekend of activity at St John’s last week. On Saturday, we used the hall as a polling station for the Newcastle council elections. To complement the day, the Guild ran a successful stall, and Paul Youman co-ordinated a sausage sizzle from the time the booth opened until early in the afternoon.

Then, on Sunday, David Banney co-ordinated a wonderful concert of the music of Bach and Handel, with visiting violinists Elizabeth Holowell and Peta Dries, and an ensemble of string players.

The BBQ and the concert together raised $1400 which is going straight to support the work of the 1K Club for protecting the church against water damage. Many thanks to Paul and all who worked on the BBQ, and to David and all the musicians who supported these events by giving up their time and talents to support this important project. Thanks also to the Guild, who supported the 1K Club by donating the first $8K when we launched it.

Blessings,

Murray

This bulletin was emailed to members of the parish on Wednesday 13 September 2017 – if you would like to join the Weekly Bulletin email list, please call the church office on 02 4927 5399 and we will happily arrange this.

Monday Meditations

Twice a month we have services on Monday night in the chapel. The first Monday evening of each month we have a Healing Eucharist, the third Monday of each month we offer a time of worship and Christian meditation.

If you can’t worship with us on Sunday, we would love to welcome you to worship with us on Monday evening at 6pm. The next Monday night service is this week. Please do join us if you can!

School Holiday Club – 3–6 October 2017

Our fantastic school holiday club is back for 2017. It runs from Tuesday 3 October to Friday 6 October 2017 – week 2 of the school holidays.

We are continuing to the next stage of the “Guardians of Ancora” theme that we began last year and we’re mixing in a combination of art and adventure as well.

Please feel free to share our video post if you are on Facebook:

Newcastle Tudor Singers

Members of St John’s are invited to a Sunday afternoon concert at Sacred Heart Cathedral on Sunday 17 September at 2.30pm. The concert features Marcia Wall, Peter Guy and the Hunter Handbell Ringers and is titled ‘Sacred Music from around the World’. Tickers: $15 / $10 concession.

Lost Property!

The lost property department has recently had some lovely additions of children’s clothing. This year’s range includes clothes for boys and girls, and features shoes, hoodies, and a range of jackets. Items will be available for rescue for the next few Sundays, so please check out the lost property collection in the Hall as soon as you can!

Christmas Pudding Making – volunteers needed!

Each year, the St John’s Guild make a number of puddings to for sale at Christmas time and a they also donate some to be given to sailors in port on Christmas Day through the work of the Mission to Seafarers.

The work to prepare these delicious puddings begins long before Christmas, though! On Monday 9 October 2017 at 9.30 am we require help to weigh the ingredients. This usually takes about 2 hours. Then on Mondays 16th and 23rd October the Guild would love you to join them from 8.30am to help make the puddings. This usually takes all morning but even if you only have an hour to spare, that would be a great help for them. Please speak to a Guild member to find out more, or contact us through www.saintjohns.com.au/contact
