St John’s Weekly Bulletin – Sunday 22 January 2017

Welcome to this week’s newsletter!

This is the weekend of the Cardboard Box Challenge (Saturday 21 January). As I talked about in my sermon last week, this is an exciting opportunity to welcome families to St John’s and make them welcome. Thanks to Liz and to the team of volunteers that she has assembled to make this event happen. We can’t wait to see the results of the amazing creations! Find our more about the Cardboard Box Challenge on the ABC website:

The week after that is also a great weekend of welcome for families at St John’s. On Sunday 29 January at 10.45am we are holding a Blessing of the Backpacks service, to prepare to get the school year off to a new start. We are inviting all members of St John’s to come and welcome visitors to this service. Find more details on Facebook at

This bulletin was emailed to members of the parish on Friday 20 January 2017 – if you would like to join the Weekly Bulletin email list, please call the church office on 02 4927 5399 and we will happily arrange this.

9am service Sunday 29 January

Our main service on Sunday 29 January is the Blessing of the Backpacks. This will not be a Communion service. If you would like to receive the Eucharist that Sunday, please come at 9am for a short celebration of Holy Communion.

Volunteering at Blessing of the Backpacks

If you are looking forward to this service and would like to volunteer in some way, please let me know. I’m sure we can find a way for everyone to take part. We are particularly hoping that we can feed our guests a delicious lunch, so please let me know if you can bring a salad or a dessert for the day.

Members of the 5pm service…

I hope you received my email this week. Can you volunteer for Welcome, Prayers, or Refreshments this Sunday? If so, please head to and click on Volunteer at the 10.45am or 5pm service. Thank you.

And… please remember that there is no 5pm service on Sunday 29 January. Please join us at 10.45am instead.

New women’s Bible study groups

We are planning to start a ladies’ daytime bible study to meet on Thursdays during the school term. The aim is to make this accessible for mothers of preschool children, and so hope to organise a crèche for the children. All women are welcome, though – not just those caring for young children! Please contact Fiona Dyet on 0422 099 264 if you are interested in being part of the group.

If daytime doesn’t work for you, we would love to set up a separate women’s evening group and are looking for someone who would be willing to host this in their home. We’re not asking for someone to lead this group, just to host – but if leading a group interests you, please let me know. Is hosting a group something that you could offer to support women from your church community? Please let Murray know if you can!
