St John’s Weekly Bulletin – Sunday 11 June 2017

As I mentioned in my sermon a couple of weeks ago, the synod recently changed the way that we will elect our next bishop. As part of the new process, before we start thinking about who we want as our bishop, we are going to be forced to think about where we believe God is calling us to go as a diocese and what God is calling us to be. It’s only after that consultation about where we want to go that we get to think about who might be God’s person to lead us there. It sounds like a fairly good idea, doesn’t it!

The process of consultation will begin for us with a meeting at St John the Baptist Church, 18 Morehead Street, Lambton on Thursday 22 June from 7pm-10pm. All members of our church are welcome to attend these gatherings, with parish leaders (synod representatives, wardens, parish councillors for example) strongly encouraged to. People who are not able to attend a gathering in their own region but who wish to participate are most welcome to attend a gathering in another region. Let me know if you can’t make this meeting but might be able to attend somewhere else on a different date.

Blessings, Murray

This bulletin was emailed to members of the parish on Thursday 8 June 2017 – if you would like to join the Weekly Bulletin email list, please call the church office on 02 4927 5399 and we will happily arrange this.

Two KoG notices

I hope you have all been having a cracking term. I am missing coming along to KoG (primary school youth group years 2-6) this term, and look forward to joining you all again next term.

Unfortunately, there is no KoG on Friday 9 June as leaders and lots of kids heading off for the long weekend

Also, this term we will be moving our end-of-term outing to Week 9. We will be going to the Civic Theater to see Mary Poppins acted out by St Philip’s College. I will be sending out fliers for that this week; ticket prices are $18.00 for kids and $30.00 for adults.

Communion in homes and hospitals

One of the ministries that we love to offer here at St John’s is a service of Communion in people’s homes when they are unable to make it to church.

So if you aren’t able to make it to church – if you are in hospital, if you are temporarily housebound through physical illness, are suffering from depression, have mobility problems, whatever – we would love to come and share the Eucharist with you. It doesn’t need to be a long visit, but we are always happy to come.

Please contact Murray on 02 4927 5399 if you would like to be visited at home or in hospital, or if you know someone who would like a visit.

Samaritans Winter Appeal

Samaritans has launched its Winter Appeal and is calling on you to help put an end to youth homelessness – an invisible crisis. You will find a letter and donation form included in this month’s edition of the Encounter magazine. Please consider a gift to Samaritans 2017 Winter Appeal and return the form with your donation or donate online at www.samaritans.org.au/donate. Every dollar helps Samaritans support young people in our Diocese. Thank you for your generosity!

Gudalcanal 300 Club

As the parish mission secretary I wish to express my thanks for the financial support our parish has been able to give Bishop Nathan Tome, Bishop of the Diocese of Guadalcanal as he seeks to raise funds to purchase a boat so that he can visit his clergy and people, many of whom can only be reached by boat. Our Diocese of Newcastle has a link with Guadalcanal and parishes and people asked if they could assist by raising $300.00 towards this important ministry of the Bishop. Our gift was $1830.00. Jennifer Benson.
