Time to Pray – Daily Prayer for Saturday 22 December, 2018

The Lord our God the Almighty reigns.

Let us rejoice and exult and give God the glory.

Revelation 19.6-7

Glory to God; Father, Son and Holy Spirit:

as in the beginning, so now, and for ever. Amen.

A poem: A Song of God’s Grace

Blessed are you, the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ:
for you have blessed us in Christ Jesus with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places.
You chose us to be yours in Christ
before the foundation of the world:
that we should be holy and blameless before you.
In love you destined us to be your children,
through Jesus Christ:
according to the purpose of your will,
To the praise of your glorious grace:
which you freely bestowed on us in the Beloved.

Ephesians 1.3-6

The opening prayer

By night and by day we worship the Lord; let us pray with one heart and mind.

We remember God’s presence and pause in silence.

Father of lights, receive the prayer and praise we offer you as our daily sacrifice; make us a light for all the world, delivered by your goodness from all the works of darkness; through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord. Amen.

The readings

1 Samuel 1.24-end

When she had weaned him, she took him up with her, along with a three-year-old bull, an ephah of flour, and a skin of wine. She brought him to the house of the LORD at Shiloh; and the child was young. Then they slaughtered the bull, and they brought the child to Eli. And she said, ‘Oh, my lord! As you live, my lord, I am the woman who was standing here in your presence, praying to the LORD. For this child I prayed; and the LORD has granted me the petition that I made to him. Therefore I have lent him to the LORD; as long as he lives, he is given to the LORD.’

She left him there for the LORD.

Psalm 113

Alleluia. Give praise, you servants of the Lord,
O praise the name of the Lord.

Blessed be the name of the Lord,
from this time forth and for evermore.

From the rising of the sun to its setting
let the name of the Lord be praised.

The Lord is high above all nations
and his glory above the heavens.

Who is like the Lord our God, that has his throne so high,
yet humbles himself to behold the things of heaven and earth?

He raises the poor from the dust
and lifts the needy from the ashes,

To set them with princes,
with the princes of his people.

He gives the barren woman a place in the house
and makes her a joyful mother of children. Alleluia.

Luke 1.46-56

And Mary said,

‘My soul magnifies the Lord,
and my spirit rejoices in God my Saviour,
for he has looked with favour on the lowliness of his servant.
Surely, from now on all generations will call me blessed;
for the Mighty One has done great things for me,
and holy is his name.
His mercy is for those who fear him
from generation to generation.
He has shown strength with his arm;
he has scattered the proud in the thoughts of their hearts.
He has brought down the powerful from their thrones,
and lifted up the lowly;
he has filled the hungry with good things,
and sent the rich away empty.
He has helped his servant Israel,
in remembrance of his mercy,
according to the promise he made to our ancestors,
to Abraham and to his descendants for ever.’

And Mary remained with her for about three months and then returned to her home.

The Prayers

The Lord’s Prayer

Our Father in heaven,
hallowed be your name,
your kingdom come,
your will be done on earth as in heaven.
Give us today our daily bread.
Forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us.
Save us from the time of trial and deliver us from evil.
For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours now and forever.
Amen.

We thank God for what we have and pray for what we need.

Today we pray for ourselves, that God would give us his Spirit to help us live a life marked by holiness. In our local church, we ask God to bless people preparing to come to worship tomorrow, and support for those who who can’t be at church because of illness or age. In our world, we pray for all who serve in the courts and the justice system. We remember before God those who have asked for our prayers, or who are in need of them.

A prayer for the day

Lighten our darkness, Lord, we pray: and in your great mercy defend us from all perils and dangers of our life; for the love of your only Son our Saviour Jesus Christ. Amen.

The Lord be with us

now and forever.

Let us praise the Lord.

Thanks be to God.

Since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us run with perseverance the race that is set before us, looking to Jesus the pioneer and perfecter of our faith Amen.
